system file size

My daughter's 530 is struggling for memory. The system file size is 2.67gb, I've hard reset the phone, but that is over half the memory. Is that right? Everything is set to store on SD card, but the phone memory keeps going down. She currently has 600mb left. There is only 7mb of temporary internet files so it's not that. The phone wants to update to 8.1, but she can't afford to lose any more memory.

To install 8.1 you need at least 2GB free space on the phone. Preferably more.

You can move apps to the SD card as well to clear up space.

Thanks for the reply. Just realised the phone already has 8.1, which is lucky as the 530 only comes with 4gb, so a 2gb update would be impossible. I'm guessing the update must be Denim.
