why does my htc 8s turn on but when its unlocked it is just a black screen?

I can turn on my htc windows 8s but when I unlock it it is just a black screen but still lets me see the time and signal etc at the top of the screen, before this happened there was other problems such as the phone freezing, not allowing access to some apps, not allowing me to send text messages or type them out. what can I do to fix this or do I need a new phone?

I would start off with a soft reset (hold power button + volume down until the phone powers off/vibrates)
If that fails then your next step would be a hard reset.
