Lumia 1020 acting wierd (unusable) and Windows Device recovery tool cannot rescue it

Hi, my 2 year old Nokia Lumia 1020 gave up on my yesterday night. It was working perfectly well until when I woke up and found the phone on flight mode and could not open any apps. Tried restarting the phone and the start screen showed the windows 10 logo with the 'Not for resale' text under it (My phone ran WP8!! Then where did this come from). The start screen opens but I cannot turn off flight mode and none of the apps open.

Soft reset did not work. Hard reset failed. Could not recover files because no folders showed up when I connected the phone to my computer. Tried flashing the phone using the windows device recovery tool but it just failed to do anything although it did detect the device. Tried using the 'the device was not detected option', the big NOKIA logo appears and the device goes to the red progress bar screen momentarily before the toll displays and error and the phone resumes a normal start.

PS: I did have Windows 10 insider preview for a few months but had reverted back to WP8 almost 2 months ago and the phone was working perfectly fine before this happened.

I assume you forgot to uncheck the download of future build, because that exactly what happend. It got updated and downloaded an insider build, and it waited the last moment (by default sometimes around 3 a.m.) and tried to install. Now either the install process got messed up or it was you that messed it up by reseting your phone, could be both.

I'd suggest taking it to store to get it fixed. Since it's a software thing it shouldn't cost too much as i assume your warranty has expired.
