Hi.
I've been thinking of getting an Xbox1 with Kinect for use with the fitness program and for my young son's occasional entertainment. Our living room isn't that big though so I want to hear what's the true minimum distance between Kinect and the people it's trying to see. Does it vary by game/app? What's the sweet spot?

In my opinion, the Kinect's range distance is pretty poor. A big factor is your size. As someone who is a bit on the taller side (over 6'), it's hard for me to do stuff with Kinect at times. The minimum distance to see me is probably about 5 feet. However, at probably 8-10 feet, it starts to lose me. I can see my silhouette 100% visible on the Kinect's visual box, but it struggles to see me. IDK if the background behind you can make that easier or harder, same with lighting. It's generally a short-range device without too much leeway, in my experience.
