Questions about updating a new Nokia Lumia 920

Ok, so my uncle bought me a Nokia Lumia 920 (brand new, UK, sim-free) as a gift. Yes, it is 2 years old now but then again, I've never really craved *new* phones, and I've been using my lovely Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc since 2012, not to mention my uncle got it for a bargain considering its specs. I'm not some newbie to WP though, my brother has had a HTC 8S for over a year, and I've personally always liked the platform.

Anyway, the 920 arrived at my house today. Gorgeous yellow design by the way! The thing is, just as the seller stated on the eBay description (and I can confirm now), it comes with the original stock Windows Phone 8, i.e. the one that shipped with it in 2012, without any updates.

Now obviously I would like to update before transferring my personal files to it. I understand there have been the Amber, Black and Cyan (w/ 8.1) updates so far. My questions are:

1. Can I update straight to Cyan and 8.1 or does it need to be step-by-step, i.e. Amber first then Black then Cyan? What about 8.1 GDR1?
2. If yes, does Cyan include the improvements that came in Amber and Black, such as Glance screen?
3. Do you recommend me to update to 8.1? I've heard many people saying that there have been more battery life drainage, and that the music app has been 'ruined'. After researching I found out that the music hub was removed in 8.1 and many people did not like it. However these articles date back to April 2014, so has there been updates that make the music app good like it was in 8.0?

Re: Questions about updating a new Nokia Lumia 920

All the improvements of Amber and Black will be there. Yes, I would recommend that you update to 8.1. The music app is usable in my opinion however it does need improvements. Battery life has gotten better for me. About GDR1, you need to sign up for the Developer Preview to get it as it has not been officially released. I'm waiting for the official update so I cant comment on performance.

Re: Questions about updating a new Nokia Lumia 920

Yes you have to go through each update as Cyan will not install unless you're running Black and black won't install unless you're running Amber. So you do have to go through it step by step. So for the advice about not needing Lumia Black first is not true. If in any doubt research the installation of Lumia Cyan for yourself and you'll see that it won't install unless you've updated to Lumia Black first. N.B we are talking about NOKIA PHONES!! All others may not need any particular updates before cyan but all NOKIA phones running WP8 needs Lumia Black before going to Lumia Cyan.

And I didn't say he would update directly to Cyan. Did you read my post? I wouldn't comment on that because I DON'T KNOW! All I said was that Amber and Black features were not ripped out with Cyan.

Re: Questions about updating a new Nokia Lumia 920

woah woah calm down guys
he can update from portico to cyan directly with the two update method(one small, one big)
no need to go through black and amber
only drawback is camera quality which is best on portico
for camera quality- portico>cyan>black>amber
for everything else cyan is the best
