PC Reset will not keep my Windows 10 activated?

Hi there!

I've upgraded my Windows 8.1 Pro (activated with DreamSpark key) to the Windows 10 Build 10162 and then to the latest Build 10240.

Now, I want to do PC reset. To complete that, I'll need a installation media, so I've already downloaded ESD of Build 10240 and converted to ISO.

Will my PC stay activated after the reset? Will my PC stay activated when I upgrade to RTM and do clean install via ISO when it's available?

Thanks.

YES It will remains activated. But with an Insider license, and not that DreamsSpark key.

If you want to keep your original license, keep your 8.1 updated and wait for Windows 10 upgrade after 29th. If you need a clean install, you can do it BEFORE you upgrade your 8.1 with the normal Windows 10 upgrade path on 29th.

This 10240 it's on TH1 branch, this is not the final branch that MS will use for normal users.

It will not STAY activated. You can use the Insider program for the foreseeable future and activate it that way, but without a genuine key. Should you decide to leave the program, your Windows will no longer work.

He's talking about TH1 10240 ISO. This ESD its from MS and its an Insider build and an Insider branch. If you use that ISO it will always be activated with an Insider key. I tested even with a local account.

I thought that as well, but 240 does not have an expiry date. And if you choose to leave the program and drop the builds, you get a message that your continued use is covered by the terms. Before, it said that you had to have your original disks. And 166, had an expiry date in Oct.

Had a Windows 7 computer at work with a bad hard drive. Formatted another drive and installed 10240 on it and set it up with local account. No auto activate on this build and a fairly large "Windows needs to Activte" watermark on the lower right side. Gave a copy of the iso to my boss and it installed and activated on his system almost immediately. He has a fairly new Lenovo T540p so has the embedded Windows 8 key.

TH1 10240 IS supposed to be the final release branch and it is speculated that in 6months when the next big update to Windows 10 comes out it will change to TH2

Not true. If you upgraded from W8.1 to W10 Build 10240 and then do reset, it keeps you licensed. I know because I did exactly that.

What you currently cannot do is to clean install W10 Build 10240 on top of W8.1 without losing license.
