Windows Phone 8.1 VPN

I live in a college campus in India. Here we use campus wifi which is proxy enabled. Due to which I cannot use some of the apps( like whatsapp) on my Windows Phone 8.1. Since WP 8.1 has got VPN support so I thought that the problem can be solved. So I installed some VPN apps from store and configured the VPN settings on my phone, but when i try to connect VPN through wifi it does not work. Any suggestion for this problem?

Make sure the VPN services function right and stuff!
You might have to resort to a paid one, but I wouldn't know, I don't use VPN much.

To the best of my knowledge, windows Phone 8.1 doesn't support very common VPN protocol except Microsoft IKEv2. so make sure you set up the VPN properly using the compatible protocols.

what VPN is this? is it one you cooked up?

I had bad luck with this one. Developer offers $2 trial; I STRONGLY suggest doing this before making a major investment!!!
