Being a little privacy conscious I don't like keeping location on all the time in my settings.. But even otherwise, keeping 'location' ON so as to keep Cortana running, doesn't it drain battery phone's battery?

Well, it doesn't matter if your location is turned on you can still be tracked with different methods. My location is always on because of Cortana and I didn't notice any difference in battery life on my L520.

As others have said, keeping location off does not stop you being tracked...

That said, Location is used by many services on smart devices to enhance those services and make them work for you. It's not a spy tool to watch you, but it can influence ad driven Apps. Mostly this is not an issue of privacy per se, but one of data mining in order to target advertising more closely to your perceived needs and wants.

All in all, as opposed as I am to being seen as nothing more than a target for advertisers, Location is otherwise too useful for me to not leave it ON 24/7. I feel the benefits far outweigh the negative aspects. I'm confident that Location being on is not a magic gateway for every developer to read my personal data such as contacts, emails, messages, phone history, etc. Those are all distinct and separate permissions. Check each App's permissions individually to see what they access and ask yourself if it is part of how the App needs to function or not. Avoid those Apps that need a lot of permissions that in no way would affect their function. Like a flashlight App that wants to see your contacts would not be good. But a Mapping tool that needs your Location would only make sense.

In general, keeping Location off to protect your privacy is a misperception at best.

I don't think it really hits my battery that hard that I even give it a second thought. However, toggling it on for every needed use would seem to be more of a drain as the Location has to start from scratch each and every time with no continuous history to draw off of.

If nothing else, keeping location on will help you find your phone in case it's lost or stolen. For me, worth a little battery percantage. 😊
