    I'd like my desktop background (and/or lock screen image -- whatever is easiest/reasonably doable) to display a countdown, to a date I've specified.

    Does such a thing exist, or could it be created fairly easily?

    This is possible (I believe) on Windows 7 through "gadgets" but anything after that, you might have trouble.

    Try search for a program called "rainmeter" it might have something of interest there.
