L650 or 1520?

I have been away from WP for almost a year and while I will use still my Note 5 as my daily driver, I am looking to get back into WP for a second device.

IMO the 1520 is one of the best phones ever created. I love that phone. But I also have been intrigued by the size, screen, and overall feel of the newer 650.

So yes I'm asking for your input. What would be your recommendation? Would u still buy a 1520, especially over a 650? Is the 1520 to "old"? Are the specs better on the 650? Does the 650 run W10 better?

Penny for your thoughts

If I wanted a phablet, then 1520. Otherwise its too big and I'll go 650.

The 1520 isn't "too old" but then again none of my phones are younger than two years old.

The specs on the 1520 are better and its a better device overall, its just older. The 650 will probably run the OS better though, and using the WDRT won't set it back to 8.1 like it would with the 1520.

My 1520 is working great... However I bought it brand new in a box 2 years ago. Battery is starting to become suspect for uncared for devices. Even "new" ones. How were they stored? Heat affects the battery. Used? How abused?

There are still people getting 1520's now. We see them in the 1520 forum. I would say it may well be worth the risk. Cut down the chances of getting a bad one by using a reputable seller with good ratings or, even better, if you can find one from a friend or a community member here in Marketplace.

The 650 is a nice phone. It doesn't have the oomph of the 1520 for SoC. RAM, storage and Camera.

But 650 is new. Warranty, yes. Built for W10M does have some advantages: device encryption and call recorder to name 2. It hasn't really been made clear yet if Tap-to-Pay is coming for legacy devices or if that will be restricted to built for W10M. Lumia 650 has it on Insider builds so we know the support is there.

To me, Lumia 1520 is still a beast and may be the best phone Nokia ever made for this platform. But the times have moved on a bit from that heyday.

1520 still has ****ty camera after so many updates. Even 535 takes better and stable pictures in normal conditions.

I'm pleased with how my shots are coming out on my 1520... Non-Insider 14393.189. These are all from Microsoft Camera and I'm showing the 5MP oversampled jpg copies. The only thing I've done to any of them on my computer is I cropped the 3rd one to show the detail... Maybe some Best Lighting tweaks on the phone.

Do you have any examples to share of how Lumia 1520 pictures have failed you?

I know right?! The 1520 camera has always been amazing. When I had one (I owned 2 at different times) ppl would always want me to take the pic.

It's so laggy that after clicking the shot, bring the phone down and only to have it taking the picture of my foot! Night shots used to be good in w8, but has been horrible since upgrading to 10.

Had to take some photos during night time for my work recently. Luckily, I brought both phones along. I had to eventually use my ZenFone instead of 1520 due to the horrible photos it is taking.

As much as I hate non-removable batteries, I'd have to choose the Lumia 1520 given a choice between those two. The larger screen and superior specs justifies it for me.

I went and played with the 650 today in the store. Nice phone though not the premium feel of the 1520. And while I like the size it's hard not to grab a 1520 once you've owned one before. Like I said... It's the best phone ever.

Question. How has it been doing on W10M? When I had mine last it was ok but still buggy. That was like 8 months ago. Any improvements?

FWIW, go with the 650.

I bought a used 1520 about 18 months ago as I was frustrated with my One M8. It was a good device, and ran the insider builds nicely.

I was then given a 950xl and put the 1520 away for about eight months. When my 950xl screen broke, I used the 1520 for awhile. I just felt the device was sluggish. I eventually went to the One M8 until the 950xl came back.

In the interim, my beautiful young bride dropped her S4 active and cracked the screen. I bought her a Lumia 650 and am thrilled about the performance. Camera is good too. I'm just not thrilled with the small screen size.

Of course, now I'm loving the Elite X3 and my 950xl feels small.

Yeah that x3 looks sweet. Would love it but price tag way to high for me.

Got a 650 but starting to regret it. I can always send it back. It's SLOW! I'm use to superior specs. I may jump on a 1520 (or possibly a 930 though no LTE is an issue) after all.

Why would the 1520 be slow? It has much better spec than 650. I am still waiting for shipping confirmation on three 650's from cricket that I ordered Thursday evening. Depends on how they perform (if I ever get them) I may look for a used 1520 or 950 xl.

Life is too short to be unhappy with your phone. If it is bugging you, I would suggest sending it back when/if you find a deal on that 1520 somewhere.
