When I first got my surface pro 2 and type cover 2, the backlight buttons and that whole row could just be pressed, and the fn key to activate f3, etc, like for games that use that. Now I have to use fn f2 to brighten the backlight, instead of just pressing f2. Did Microsoft change this in a small/minor update in Windows Update, or am I alone?

I don't own a Surface but taking a stab at it. I own a HP laptop. When I got it I had to use the fn key to use the F keys, something that drove me nuts cause I use them frequently. Anyway, I found out that in the BIOS there's a setting you can turn on or off depending on how you want to use the F keys. Not sure if the Surface is the same but I would guess it's something like that.

You might have hit fn + "caps lock". This toggles the fn key. From being use for the "f-keys" to being use for the utilities.
