Various Nokia feature phones, a Nokia C5, a cheap Android phone and an iPhone 5 (don't ask me why).

Even so, that's a lot of backups. And I've made arrangements to various people to give me their phones!

Unlocked 820 backs up the AT&T 1020 and the T-Mobile 521. The 900 is another option on AT&T but the backup to cloud feature makes the 820 the superior option for an essentially seamless emergency transition. I got the 521 to get access to wifi calling and it is a really nice phone that works around the limitations of the T-Mobile network in my area. The 820 works fine on T-Mobile but lacks that feature.

Current phones = 920 given to me by work and Galaxy S2 = Personal.

1020 will become personal phone and I'll put the work sim in an S4 I'm buying ,
and have my 920 for a backup (either work or personal)

Once 1520 comes out I might sell the 1020 and upgrade to that (920 will still be backup)

    ***EDIT****

1020 arrived and is going back
Main reason is the network I got it on has no 3G or 4G coverage where I live
and 2nd reason is that it is not really what I would call a technical upgrade from 920. Yes it has a slightly and I really do mean slightly better camera. Needs way more post processing to make it a larger shift in difference of picture quality. The problem isn't that the 1020 isn't a great camera as it is , the problem is that 920 is a very good camera.

I don't have a backup phone. I have a backup line, one that I can add to my account and get a new device right away. Additional taxes and charges aside it is the least favorite option but it is better than dark alley meetings from Craigslist. I'm waiting for my daughter's 900 to break so she gets a 920 in it's place (insurance) so I have a more modern fallback option. That will tick off the wife - she hates the camera on her HTC One. (Compared to the Lumia)

If you can, keep the 920. I know people could help offset the purchase of a new phone by selling/trading in their old device but if that isn't a hinderance here I would highly suggest keeping your 920 in the event you need a device running WP8 to tide you over.

My current phone is now a 920, so my previous phone, a Lumia 800 is now my backup phone. The good thing with this is that my backup phone is still synced with the same Microsoft account, so I just switch it on and what I need is there. I do have a trusty 3310 sitting in my draw though, I'll never get rid of that

Thanks for the advice, but since I've been living multi-platform for quite a while (I have Androids and iOS devices as well) I try my best to use apps and services which have cross platform support, so the changing of platform doesn't pose much if any problems, and email is just email if the platform has Exchange support. This is why I don't understand how people say it is hard to switch platforms since I've switched maybe 4 to 5 times (iPhone to Android to Meego to WP7 to WP8) - I reckon that's only because people fear change so they choose to lock themselves in.

HTC Titan 2, that still hasn't gotten 7.8.

IPhone 3gs which the home button doesn't work and the phone is about to fall apart (I abused it)

I used to have a hd7 but I sold it.

I have been running on my backup DROID II Global for about a month while my wife has been using my Verizon 8X to see if Windows Phone 8 will work for her.

Unfortunately Windows Phone 8 is missing too many features for her, so today I got in an HTC Droid DNA for her. (She is a long time HTC android user- this is her 4th HTC android phone). We get the 8X configured back to my number tomorrow.

She was impressed with WP8, but requires features that won't be out until WP8.1 or later.

    Hey..... I tried.....
