Why won't my mp3 and video files play on my wp8 Lumia 1320

I transferred my mp3. music to my phone but when I tried to play the music an error message appears saying files are either corrupted or in the wrong format. All these files played perfectly on my previous phones, although none of the previous were Windows phones.
Video files are mostly in .vob format, these won't play, nor will mpeg4 format, I have never owned a Windows before and so there is probably a very obvious reason for these problems, but not to me.
