screen lock during calls

when im in a call my screen locks automatically even if the phone isnt against my face. i cant do anything untill the other person hangs up.
is this a settings option?

i cut around the sensor n it works now.

isn't the protector suppose to be per-cut to fit?

it's supposed to be , you might have covered proximity sensor with protector( I have the same issue on my Lumia 920 and now I don't use any of them )

Is this still the legit fix for the screen locking and staying black when on a call? My Lumia Icon started doing this about two weeks ago and it is infuriating. I do have a screen protector on, but do not think the proximity sensor is covered. In addition, I blew an air gun (as suggested elsewhere) to clean out any dust and again, still dealing with this issue. I am on 8.1, most recent update and have very few apps and tweaks on the device. It just came out of nowhere and if I need to dial in any numbers when on a call, I have to hit the power button repeatedly to get the screen on for all of three seconds. Just B R U T A L!

Where exactly is the proximity sensor?

Suggestions would be welcome. Thanks.
