1280x720 vs 1280x768

So these are the 2 new screen resolutions supported for WP8, why have 2 so similar? I know 1280x768 is 16:10 and the same proportions to the current 800x480, and 720p is what android has and is 16:9. What's so great about 720 compared to 768? It has less pixels and is a different proportion to WP standard, yet is marketed more.

tl,dr: Why both, what would you choose?

Personally, I'd go with 720p at this stage. The full-width home screen needs to be offset by some vertical length. However, interesting takeaway is that the tiles must be properly scalable to support both 768x720, and hence it is *possible* that they will introduce an option to bring back my beloved blank right bar. :[

720p will appear to show more content in portrait, due to the aspect ratio. WXGA will just look like a high-detail WVGA screen.

I'd go with the 16:10 screen, there is no substitute for more vertical space in horizontal, and I don't need the extra space left and right (in horizontal, up and down in portrait) for anything. And I also don't watch movies on a tiny screen, and even if I would it wouldn't be in a form in which I take my movie experience serious...more like tv shows during flight switching etc...and that happens, what...once to a few times a year...and to suffer the other 360 days because of that? I really hate 16:9 screens on anything other than a TV. Phones, Tablets, Laptops, Computers... they all need vertical space. No brainer for me: 16:10.

Is it entirely possible that there is support for a 1080p screen and they didn't tell us? I'm hoping for the 1080p Lumia Pureview! Imagine that AMOLED screen in 1080p with clearblack curved Gorilla Glass!!!! It would be the best screen on the market for years!!! Then add the PV Camera, NFC etc...what phone could compete??????

I wouldn't dream of it. Even if it were possible, phone makers will make sure to meet the bare minimum. Even the Lumia 900 didn't had the best specs, it was the titan 2.

We need a surface phone .

However, other OEMs, like Samsung, tend to use the same hardware across their Android and Windows Phone lines (see the Focus vs Galaxy S). Since 1280x720 is much more popular in the Android realm, Microsoft needed to support that resolution, as well. Windows Phone is simply not popular enough to demand OEMs to support the less common 1280x768 resolution.

I'll go with 768 if the phone will run Windows 8 application.
The minimum limit to run Windows RT application is 1024 x 768

I'd prefer 768, but I bet 720 will be more popular. HD sounds better to the public than WXGA

Sounds plausible. I'd prefer the extra width of 768.

My maths could be completely wrong, but where are people getting 16:10 from? 1280x768 is the same aspect ratio as the current 800x480... which is 5:3 (15:9) - closer to 16:10 than 16:9, but not the same.

So 768 will be like a super version of current resolutions. I'm going to be honest with you, I don't have the best eyes so once a resolution hits a certain point it looks the same for me. (Sensation screen versus Iphone 4Gs and Galaxy Nexus for the example).

So 720 screens will longer but 768 more square like right? I'll take longer lol.

LG announced recently they had just made a 5" 1080p panel. But it will be some time before they get that down to something that can go into a mobile device.

But how will the apps scale? Now we have 800 x 480 -> simply multiply the width by 1.5. This will work as almost every margin in apps can be divided by 2. But what about the 1280 x 768 resolution. It will have a factor of 1.6 which will cause not sharp edges etc... This is why i dont understand why this resolution is supported...? What do you think?

The 768 sounds to me like a more "desktopy" resolution, so the developers could maybe build a Windows RT app which would work on computers (the Surface slate) and also on phones. That would be nice for the developers. But I'm going to see what resolutions (ekhm, phones*) will the carriers actually offer, and then decide which one is better. Test the phones people, that's the only way you're going to see which one is better .

Although the 768 will be just a bit wider than 720.. but nevermind, that extra few pixels never hurt

Prefer 768 for better landscape browsing and such. Also it is the same ratio (5:3 or 15:9 if you want to keep :9 as the common denominator) as our current 800x480 res so everything current will scale perfectly. HD video (720p) will fit with very slight black bars on top and bottom so will not be a big deal. I think 720p devices are a bit too skinny in portrait IMO.
