Someone made a suggestion in the comments section of another site that the 3 big mobile players should team up when it comes to updates delivered directly to consumers instead of through carriers. Most of us realize that MS would have a hard time doing it by themselves as their market pull is still pretty small. What if all three decided to do it though? Sure the carriers could try and play divide and conquer by singling out MS by immediately stopping carrying WP devices, but I would imagine there could be a law suit there to be had.

I know cooperation will probably never happen, but this seems like a time where it will only help the big 3.

Well they wont, because this could backfire in there faces right now.. wp8 is to small to demand anything and google/apple wont take the risk either

I don't think Google is technically capable of doing this, even if they agreed with the approach. Android has so many hardware and software variants now that I am guessing it would take a pretty significant change to the OS in order for that to be supported. I'm not talking about Nexus here, I'm thinking about Samsung, HTC, etc. Their skins and customizations are IMHO what has really crippled their ability to update existing phones.
Apple and MS, however could do this pretty easily I think. I was under the impression that Apple already had this ability? MS definitely seems to be capable, and probably more so now that they own the device side of the Nokia business.

Apple already does this, Google is far too fragmented to have a united effort (most the times, OEMs don't bother to update their devices once they hit market, leaving them stuck on the iteration of Android they were released with, forever).

It's a noble effort, but I think we'll have to remain content with the Developer Preview for now.

If you **** off the carriers, then they stop using a lot of their own money to advertise your products.

That is the point of working together. Carriers can do what they do because they all play by the same general rules. Phone and OS makers need to do the same.

The only real solution is asking ppl stop buying subsidized phones, you know, like rest of the world population do. Then, carrier will have no say on updates even if they wanted to. Google already started it by selling Nexus phones and Google Experience Phones directly to consumers, bypassing carriers and phone makers.

Microsoft should do the same with Nokia phones.

One thing Google is doing is moving more and more of the system functionality out of the core OS and into their own app suite, which is then put on Play Store and anyone can download them, regardless of OEM/carrier crippleware that purports to have similar functionalily - see Gmail, Google Now, Calendar and a few more. Nokia is (was?) moving in this direction as well. Perhaps a good way to keep users happy without letting the carriers interfere.
