I have a dilemma. I would really like to install the update, but have reservations after reading some of the bad stories regarding the update. I know this must be the minority or there would be some moves on Microsoft's end to rectify the situation.

Before I decide, I wanted to get opinion of the 920 owners regarding any specific bugs / problems found with the update. Specifically the US on AT&T My 920 my daily driver, and would really not like it to have major problems or god forbid get bricked. I have 8 months on my contract before I can upgrade. I guess if worse comes to worse, I can go pick up a 520.

So.. please help me decide, should I, or should I not?

if its your daily driver, then do the update during the weekend or when you have a day or two off (not a 920 user) but just advice

I have a 920 on ATT and had no problems with update. There were two updates when I did it which Im not sure is if normal or if I had missed a previous standard update. And love 8.1 btw :)

resetting or updating the 920 is always an adventure because of the spinning gears. The gears isn't much of an issue for other lumia models that i've had (620/1020), but the stuck spinning gears have hit my 920s multiple times. You just have to keep hard resetting until it goes through.

If you are gonig to update update at your own risk and make sure you have plenty of free time to keep resetting if need be.

As far as bugs go, each version of OS has its own bugs and generally get fixed. For me, i always update to the newest OS.

I had issues with the 8.1 update last night. The first update went smoothly, the second update drained my battery while updating. I ended getting stuck in a cycle of charging to power back on, then updating until it died. I had to flash the phone, so I didn't get anywhere.

I am feeling a bit better about possibly doing the update lol Mxdude, was your battery death because you did not have it on a charger while doing the update? I always put mine on charger when doing an update, so if that was the cause it may not be an issue with me.

I might throw the update on my device Thursday night then, if not Sat. most likely. I am starting to see more and more posts from people that did a successful update. I can live with a few small bugs, but major ones like no data, or no cellular would be a deal breaker lol

There aren't any bugs that I can see. Definitely noticed a quicker drop in battery life, but I'm assuming a big part of that is constantly having Cortana run in the background. Same with auto updates of apps.

My only two caveats with 8.1 are the Xbox Music app being a bit slower to load my content, and my games are no longer aggregated exclusively to my Games hub, but now populated in both the hub and my app list.

The pros outweigh the cons though. To me, the OS feels faster if you can believe that, and if you have bad eyes/dont like super tiny tiles, then don't turn on the third row of tiles. Seriously. Looks like a scrunched up 1520 window.

*Edit* I absolutely love the following:

Cortana (replaces Bing search in your magnifying glass hardware button. Do not know if searching with her gives you Bing credits or not)

Background/Iconic tiles (Usually theme colored tiles like Explorer, Hotmail that turn see through but maintain the logo to allow bits of the background image through)

Notification/Action center (No cell data switch to be found. Not a deal breaker for me)

And other tweaks that escape me right now. Hope my input help!

I have a 920, but in India.
The only issue is a horrible battery life post update. I can't seem to get even half a day now, whereas earlier I could easily pull it through an entire day.
Due to this horrible battery life, i'm also experiencing heating issues.
I'll soon be trying a hard reset to see if it will solve this issue.
Other than this battery drain, everything seems fine.
Oh, yes, I've enabled Cortana using the language trick. Will soon get rid of her coz I giv preference to my battery life.

Guys let me tell you the secret; Soft reset your phone after every software update/if u can afford, hard reset it.

If it's a new phone, hard reset it after out of box and first power....does away with factory errors esp on 1520.

Did these things for my 920 and all is just perfect...it is a great phone.

Mate go for 8.1. I have not seen a single bug as of yet. It takes about an hour to update and faster if you have a decent internet connection for the download. I think the battery issues are caused by all the apps being allowed in the background again in which case you simply disable them again in battery saver settings (background settings have been moved to battery saver) and you can also check which app uses the most battery.

Okay..as we all know that 920 always had battery issues. I've had my 920 since last 6 months as my daily driver.. And my only issue with it was less than satisfactory battery life.

At most..with medium to heavy usage.. I would get 7 hours before battery gets critically low.
Now with (8.0)nokia black, I've had to do a lot of optimizations so to speak to achieve those 7 hours.
Namely
*keeping background tasks to less than 3 apps
* disabling 3g("India") wherever possible
And some of other stuff we all did.

I was sincerely hoping that 8.1 would patch this problem.

After updating to 8.1.. The first thing I've noticed that battery was discharging constantly even when I plugged in the charger.
I've been trying to charge my 920 from yesterday but I never got it charged it to 100% until now.

Below are the things I have tried until now.. Which kinda helped. Not much... Just a lil bit.

* disable all background apps except WhatsApp and calendar.
* disable background wallpaper
* disable cortana
* switched 3g to edge
* switched automatic brightness to medium- low..
* switched automatic sync of mails to manual
* did a soft reset 3-4 times..

Battery is still discharging as I'm writing this post(wpc app) 80%-78% while still plugged in..
Brightness: Low
Cortana:off
Network:edge

I agree with those complaining about the battery life. It really got worse.
Second thing which annoys me is the removal of the "Wifi always on/off when locked" option, as I don't need wifi while my phone is in my pocket... as a consequence I have to switch it on/off manually all the time.

Apart from these two issues I appreciate the new features (albeit I'm not a huge fan of talking to a machine).

You will have to see for yourself if you rather want to wait until they fix the problems (if they do at all) or live with the shortcomings of the preview.

In my opinion, turning wifi off while the phone is locked uses more battery because the phone will then use 3G which uses more battery than wifi.

We're getting a bit off topic here, I'm afraid. My point was that I'm missing said option in WP8.1 regardless of battery usage. Nonetheless, from what I've read your statement appears to be true in some scenarios but does not apply generally.
