10586 Update Question

So, I've been patiently waiting for the latest Windows 10 update for my SP4 and it finally popped up yesterday. Windows Update apparently downloaded it and installed it ... except not. None of the changes associated with 10586 are in place. Going to command prompt and typing "ver" indicated I'm still on 10240. WTF?!

This morning it's downloading 10586 AGAIN, which of course takes forever ... What the hell is going on here? No error messages or anything popped up that I saw, though I wasn't watching it the entire time. Also, I've noticed than an "11/2/2015 Firmware Update" downloaded and ostensibly installed again, for what has to be at least the SIXTH time. Any idea what's going on here? So confused ...

Thanks!

When I updated to 10586, I went the route of resetting the SP4 using a USB containing the factory image for it. Then I went through the Windows update process. I don't know if that will help you or not. I didn't mind doing a reset since I hadn't setup the SP4 all that much with programs and such.

Which partition did you install on?

I had a similar failure on the first attempt. I suspect the dock. So before proceeding with the second attempt, I have disconnected the dock and all went through successfully. I don't know if that was just a coincidence, but to be safe, I recommend disconnecting everything: dock, USB dongle and Micro-SD card before proceeding with the update. I only had the Type Cover and the power source connected.

I don't recall it asking me to choose a partition when doing the reset from the factory image. If you try to do a clean install from a Windows 10 ISO, then I believe it will prompt you for a partition. The problem with that is that you will lose any preloaded software, like Drawboard PDF, which comes for free with the Surface. This is why I opted to do a clean install, starting with the factory image.

Well, Windows update tried installing the 10586 update again today after taking hours to download whatever it downloads (and apparently never saves) and this time it said it failed. I'm absolutely astonished how horrible the SP4 has turned out to be. It's literally BRAND NEW and doesn't even work properly. HOW?!?!?!

So was it the download that failed, or the installation? I *again* reinstalled from a factory image last night, and let the device go through all the normal windows updates. It does take a bit of time to download everything, but the installation itself was problem free.

When I downloaded the update, I thought that was it and was disappointed in not seeing any changes. Then I had another go at it and realized I hadn't actually installed the update that I downloaded.

have you tried using media creation tool from MS website? I find this is the best way to update pc's at least.
give it a try

Yeah, it downloaded successfully on both occasions, but apparently the installation didn't work and it never gave me any reason why it just said "there's another update available."

Success! I've got 10586 now. I downloaded and ran the Windows 10 Update Troubleshooter (Windows Update Troubleshooter - Windows Help -), which made some changes and allowed the installation to proceed. If anyone else is having issues give this little tool a try.
