1520 - Battery Stats incorrect :(

My old and trusty 1520 has developed this problem recently. The battery % is all over the place and turns off @ 35% sometimes.

Today when I was charging from 0% up till ~30% it jumped to 100% and says it's now fully charged.

I understand that this can mean the battery is half dying, but I want to rule out the software side of things first. So is there a way I can reset/wipe the battery status and see if that resolve the issue? Thanks in advance.

If you are looking for the software side, backup and reset your device.
Settings>system>About>Reset

Then see how it goes. IF still the same behavior, its might be something wrong with the battery.
