640 vs 920 (or 925)

Edge is way better and faster than ie on the 635 and 640. I own both phones

640(Pros)
  • Speed
  • SD Card
  • Screen Size
  • Battery Life

925(Pros)
  • Feel/Build Quality
  • Physical Camera Button
  • Wireless Charging Case (Optional)

I was very happy with my 925, but after using the 640 for a few days, it is a better smartphone. If I hadn't been looking for a dual SIM phone I would have waited longer to replace my 925.

Must be the difference between the newer SoC's and the older S4. That said, Edge must have drastically improved, because I loaded one of the first (either first or second build with it) builds with Edge on my 1520 and I wasn't impressed with speed, either.

I have the latest build on my 1020 right now and its no faster than IE was. It does load quickly once it starts to render, but its noticeably slower to actually start rendering than IE. On 3 devices I've used it on (520,1020,1520), all clean installs.

It's not a fact. Many people have noted Edge is slower. I've used both... I wasn't guessing, I gave my experience, and if it differs from yours, its not really a fact is it?

I'm not calling you a liar, but your experience with Edge isn't a common one. Something is either wrong with your install or your network, esp if you're running the latest build. Comb the forums & you'll see almost everyone says Edge is way faster at everything.

Other than that, not sure what else to tell you. But I wouldn't go around warning people not to install 10 just because you had a bad experience. Like I said, it's not the norm with the latest builds. Again, people can install it & see for themselves instead of taking my or your word for it. Can always revert back. I'm not telling anyone to do anything.

Nah. There's not really a point continuing it, but like I said. 3 phones, all clean installs. Various networks. I've read a handful of people say the same as me, so. (granted, I never used a newer build on my 1520, but my 1020 is up to date, clean install)

I've never really had an issue with IE's speed, though. I tend to hard reset/wipe my devices every now and then, anyways. Now IE rerendering pages after the initial render, that annoys the heck out of me. Or scrolling and having it randomly jump somewhere else.

Hm, that's unfortunate. I'm not a huge camera snob, but anything lower quality than my 925 & I'll prob have to pass. Remembering that the 920/925 are pretty old phones at this point, I'd at least expect mid tier phones of today to match their cameras. Guess not.

Keep in mind that the 640 doesn't have a Pureview camera. The XL however has Zeiss optics so that would be the better option if you want a good camera.

I picked up a 640 to replace my 925 after I cracked its screen. It was still very usable but dirty screens are a pet peeve of mine much less a pretty good cracked screen.

After a few days of using the 640 there are definitely some things I miss about my 925. I really miss how great the glance screen on the 925 is. It's brightness and visibility at any viewing angle is great especially as I like to keep my calendar displayed through glance. The 640 is severely lacking in this capacity as it only shows the time and has very poor viewing angles as well as being nowhere near as bright.

The 925 is obviously superior in build quality but unlike many here I don't think the 640 feels cheap. In fact it feels similar to an S4 in build quality which I know is a couple years old but was still a flagship at the time. For $100 I think the build quality is pretty good.

I'm no camera buff so I won't go into to much detail but the 925 dual flash is nice as well as the designated photo button and camera focus. However, the updated Lumia camera on the 640 is not bad and takes pictures much faster which is pretty nice. In good lighting you'll still get pretty good pictures.

The 640 in my opinion runs smoother and a little snappier than my 925 was running. Also my battery life was lacking only 925 and the battery on the 640 is amazing for my use (medium to heavy use but only about four apps allowed to run in background). Expandable storage is nice as well as the larger screen.

While the screen is larger you will instantly notice that the blacks aren't as black and the colors are not as bright or sharp. The 925 display is great and you will notice the difference.

In closing I had looked at the 640 many times as a replacement for my 925 but was not going to make the change. With a cracked screen on the 925 I went ahead and tried the 640. All in all its very good. You trade some great things on the 925 for great things on the 640. I was initially disappointed with glance on the 640 but I'm getting over it. The overall performance of my new 640 is winning me over. It really is just each person's preferences.
