I believe they both have a dual core snapdragon cpu.
Does anyone know how much of an advantage the 1.5Ghz in the 820 has over the 1Ghz in the 720 ?
Or is the fact the 720 has half the RAM (512MB) the more important concern?

The slightly thinner and lighter 720 is really appealing to me but I'm worried it's not enough of an upgrade to my HTC HD7. I've pretty much given up waiting for HTC to offer something that really competes with the 920 but without the extra thickness and weight. The other reason I'm now looking at the 720 is it'll be available from O2 so should work without the need to unlock with my Tesco Mobile SIM.

512mb of ram makes a **** lot of difference. All the good 3D games aren't compatible with 512mb of ram.

It indeed makes a big difference, but only if you are planning to play heavy games or use a lot of applications at the same time. Otherwise, I think it's not really a problem.
Of course, I'm not sure about the requirements of the next WP version..

720 is better in all aspects as far as i believe. It is:
slimmer
much much lighter
low light camera performance is better(6.7MP is enough too i think)
Front cam is miles ahead of 820s front cam
Gorilla Glass 2
curved display
bigger battery(a big plus point)
all other features are same like 820(removable shells, wireless charging)
it has a much better GPU (adreno 305)
display is LCD[(820 has amoled) i prefer LCDs because they have true colors, AMOLEDs do look much better on the phone but when i take a picture and see it in my laptop it becomes a bit disappointing. ].
Now it lacks only in terms of processing power and RAM. Lack of RAM will stop you from playing games like Amazing Spiderman, Dark Night, that is the most intensive ones. From the 8gb internal memory, 6gb is usable, out of that you wouldn't install many heavy games(taking 2-4 gb depending on the game), so lack of ram isn't a big deal. And also you can record 720p videos only, that also, i don't think is a deal breaker.
I own both 820 and 620, and frankly 620 feels a tad bit slow only if i keep it side by side with my 820. After my first 820 was stolen i wanted to buy a 720 only, but due to late launch date i bought the 820 again, i would highly recommend that you go for 720 and spend the money you save on a 32/64gb class 10 card and a nice pair of earphone/headphone.

What will you do with a better GPU when you cannot play all the high end 3D games? Agreed that 720 has a much much better camera than the 820 but 820 is a clear winner because of it's specifications imo.

i own a 820, i said the gpu point because high end games have some lag sometimes on 820 (seen it on 920 too though). and 820 has faster processor and more ram only, which gives a slight advantage for sure, but with 8gb internal memory, the advantage is highly restricted.

You can see how much space you would get to install games, imo, none!! I can't install even one high end game, so 820s better specs are really not of much use.

Btw, Lumia 720 has a unibody design, so no removable shells, as far as I know. Also has no LTE, camera has better low light capabilities but not sure about normal light functionality (also, only 6.7 instead of 8 MP), only wireless charging with extra shell, processor is only 1.0GHz dual core instead of 1.5.
So definitely not better on all fronts.

Wireless charging is optional, that is with a removable shell, so it definitely has removable shells like 820.
Cameras by nokia are generally good in day light/normal conditions, low light is an added advantage.

No no no, a 'shell' in this context is the whole back of the phone coming off to reveal the battery, SIM tray and SD card slot.
The 720 is unibody, its back does not come off. The colour of the 720's back will be like that forever.

There is a removable cover that you can get from Nokia that gives the 720 wireless charging capability. This works like any normal cover where you just slip it onto the back.

The 305 gpu is "weaker" than the 225 gpu.

305 vs 225, that has always confused me, 305 is newer generation but many posts say 225 is better, i have never got a clear answer though.

I read somewhere that the 305 is held back buy the lower clocking (1GHz instead of 1.5 GHz) of the processor.
Not entirely sure though.

I have an 820 as well and I have a fair number of games installed on my phone with around 200 mb free space remaining. I don't understand how you cannot install any high end game on your phone :S

Well , its simple.

Series with 305 or 205 means its low end.
Look for last two digits

Series which have more value in last two digits like : 320 or 225 (where 20 or 25 is greater than 05)
They are higher end

I meant how many games from Asphalt 7, Real football( free! but 4GB), Batman, upcoming Halo, Amazing Spiderman could you install on 820?
Maybe 2 at a time with no more space for apps.

I honestly don't see why 720 is better than 820, clearly 720 wins the camera department with its f1.9 aperture, but it's the users call. When I was gonna buy the 820, my friend told me to wait for 720 because its like a mini Lumia 920, but that's just because of camera and unibody design. The 820 however uses the same specs as the 920 (aside from onboard storage, camera, optional wireless charging which is redundant because you can't use the phone while its wirelessly charging, more like conductive charging, 60hz display and super super sensitive touchscreen - yes with Lumia 920 you can use anything but with 820 its just with gloves), so that pretty much makes the 820 a mid-range device, if not near 920s level if it weren't for its fancy add-ons.

Despite the 512MB ram and the lowered 305 adreno gpu, and the 1ghz dual core processor, this doesn't sound too much if you're coming from WP7, but you know its enough for WP8 to run smoothly. Only caveat is that this is like WP7 tango all over again, that some apps are restricted to a certain amount of ram.

So to generalize, 720 are for social people who uses everyday apps and likes to take pictures even in low light, and the 820 for the more gamer side, or power user. That is basing on the specs.
