I installed an app zoom to see full resolution images taken by me phone. When i check any picture's info it shows that the image resolution is 7.1 megapixels. At first i thought this must be the case with photos taken by Nokia camera. But when i checked default camera app photos the resolution was again 7.1 mp. But i thought 920 had 8.7 megapixel camera.....so what is this magic? Is the resolution actually 7.1 mp??

There's two settings, the more rectangular photo and the more square photo (forgot the actual names)

My 920 in the default wider-screen puts out photos of 3552x2000, you could probably get more if you set it to the other setting.

Agh I'm having a brain fart, my 920 is charging upstairs

You are shooting in 16:9 (widescreen) aspect ratio. Those photos are 7.1 MP. I guess you might get something close to ~8.2 when shooting in 4:3 aspect ratio. That's the highest resolution you could get, I suppose.

The reason you are only getting 7.1 Megapixels is because you are using 16:9(widescreen) for photo capture.

If you go into settings of the Nokia Camera app and switch to 4:3 you will get access to 8 Megapixels.

Though using 4:3 may sound a bit like a downgrade and hassle, it's not. Most phone shooters(and DSLRs) shoot photos at 4:3 as that is more natural and looks better when printed.

16:9(widescreen) looks best in video recording and playback.

If you are using 16:9 you get 3552 x 2000 resolution, for 4:3 - 3264 x 2448. If we take maximums from both cases, we get 3552 x 2448 =(approx.)8.7mpx.
