920 is not future proof according to my local CEX store

Yeah, i used to work for one of cex's electronic competitors and the staff they hire really aren't the best to be honest. I don't know what your store is like but i wouldn't believe anything they told me in my local one lol. They aren't really specialists, theyre just resellers, and as prone to bias and bad opinion as any other retail staff.

The guy probably THOUGHT that 8.1 wouldn't go to the 920, mostly because that's how Android usually operates (devices don't get support for long with that OS).

lol Android. You want an update? Sure! All you have to do is root your device and install a custom ROM. Or you could try an OTA that will very likely crash mid-install and brick your phone. Fun tiiiimmeees.

Went into CEX, to exchange my Android phone for a shiny A condition Nokia 920 and he said I should wait for the new quad core windows phones, which I thought was strange.
What would it matter to him, he said the Nokia 920 wont run 8.1 properly and its best to wait, but if I wanted to trade in then just to keep that in mind.

I've come away with nothing, so confused now...

As fast as mobile tech industry moves, 920 is past due for upgrade. The sad part about this is 930 doesn't appear to be coming to US unless you are on Verizon (Icon). I sure hope Microsoft has something planned shortly for rest of US carriers for WP customers who don't want to commit to size of a 1520.

Well he's not entirely wrong, it is a pretty old device. Nokia Care and retailers in India are already saying they can't get spare parts for my L920.

And that is why there is eBay and other suppliers

Like many have said the Lumia 920 runs 8.1 dp fine. Hardware wise to be honest if you aren't after the latest and greatest, the 920 is a great buy at the right price. Heck I have had this since launch and not once have a regretted buying it at full launch price.

Don't be put off by people tell you its heavy - it isn't they just need to lift more or stop trying to imitate those anorexic models on those glam mags lol. I have nephews and nieces who go mental over my 920 - they love it and even the youngest at 2 has no problems holding it albeit with both hands.

The Lumia 920 shares the same specs as a few Windows Phones released after it such as the 925 and I believe 928. It may be an older phone but it's more future proof than my 520 and I have 8.1 installed on that and am going to be using it for a while.

Only things you have to worry about are warranty and trade back price. Nokia will probably cover it til around December 2014 and CEX should cover it until May 2015. In terms of trading back in, the 920 will probably lose a lot of value once you've bought it so I'd only get it if you're pretty determined to get it.

If you want a Windows Phone, I'd go for it, but maybe not install 8.1 until the Nokia Cyan firmware update which will prep it better in terms of longer battery life, as it can be a bit hit or miss.

If it's a pawn shop type setup, I'm wondering if he talked you out of getting it, so that he can get it for himself after a certain period of time (if they're even barred from purchasing inventory). As a phone they work great. With Nokia Music and Here Drive, it makes a very capable media player and gps unit, even in the absence of any carrier plan, with no additional software costs involved.

Ok, one thing for all, WP 8.1 isn't future is the present so future is next big update. To be fair we can't be sure if this phone is future proof or not but it still feels like a good phone. Fact is it is certanly more future proof than Galaxy S3 or HTC ONE X.

In my local CEX I've seen N9s listed as Lumia 800 or 900s and an 820 listed as a 920, so I wouldn't give their staff's opinions much weight. If they can't even identify and label a device, how can they reasonably assess the life of one?

My 920 is another running 8.1 with perhaps a little cost in battery life and some reluctance to wake when double tapped. Other than that the experience has been flawless. I reckon I'll easily get the two years I wanted and might well get a third before I feel the need upgrade.

Assuming you're not a really heavy user, I would think the 920 will serve you well.

I'm also confident that Windows Phones will prove much less prone to obsolescence that any comparable Android device.

It will work absolutely fine but he rightly said not a future proof phone as of now. Heavy, only 1 GB ram, dual core, there are many better options now. I can say 1520, 1020, 930 are future proof for next 2 years.

the 1020? it has the same specs as the 920 apart from 2GB of ram and obv the camera

920 runs 8.1 fine although the new start tile animations visibly stutter on occasion when you load the start menu (it still feels super smooth when scrolling and stuff), so it depends on how much you care about games and battery life (get a newer phone in that case). As someone with a 920, I don't feel like I need to upgrade for anything other than wanting the better cameras on the 930 and 1520.

The factory unlocked 920s will probably get the official 8.1 update, but I wouldn't be surprised if AT&Ts never do. By the time AT&T starts pushing the update to existing devices, the 920 will be pushing 2 years old. The first contract customers will be upgrading.

Considering that the latest phones from Nokia have 512MB memory and weaker camera, you can be sure 8.1 will run fine on the 920.
