Just did a test shot and I get the choose best lighting option... on 381. If I want HDR, I make sure to have the force hdr mode, not auto.

Yes the HDR mode does take a normal picture under normal lighting conditions, i.e. in auto mode. The Force HDR always forces HDR regardless of the lighting conditions.
