After unlocking L950, will there...

I purchased a L950 of Ebay recently and should receive the unlock code for it in the next few days. Once unlocked, will it behave like a regular unbranded device with regard to OS/firmware updates etc. Also, will the o2 splash screen go once unlocked, if not, is there a way to get rid of it? Can I flash it with a standard ROM once unlocked or will the recovery tool always automatically install the o2 variant?

It will be unlocked, not unbranded. It will not behave like a regular unbranded device...at least this is how I understand it from other threads on this forum.

Can it be flashed with a standard 950 ROM using the recovery tool?

Check the thread where I detailed the procedure for changing the product code to get a new rom. The reason at the time was to get the latest firmware but it will also work for unbranding your previously carrier locked device.

Next question then, I haven't read your article yet, but I will do in a bit (thanks by the way), can I use the procedure to bypass the lock? i.e. can I change the product code and flash it with a different ROM and disable the carrier lock in doing so?
