I just saw this posted on the amazon community forum:

"Zorro says:
I spoke to tech support last month and was told the app would NOT be retired. Was I lied to? I use this app everyday. 90% of what I buy comes from Amazon and this app!"

Amazon won't let any opportunity to sell things to anyone using any legal avenue go by the wayside.

Even the EDGE browser has a new Amazon plug-in available now as an extension.
It's actually quite handy also.

Amazon has money to burn just like Microsoft.
I know it doesn't mean anything, yet both of these giants reside in the Seattle area...
...not to mention the other big favorite Starbucks :)

Just got off the phone with Amazon. My app no longer works as of today. Just errors when clicking on any links so I gave them a call. The first rep told me the app is fine, before stating "at least on my apple phone it is." When I again told her I have a Windows Phone, she said "maybe you should buy an apple phone. Amazon sells them and they have a great app store." I told her I wasn't interested in a new phone so she transferred me to the app store department. After putting me on hold for almost 14 minutes the app store rep told me that the app is being retired on Windows because Microsoft told them they had to. He then told me that they are not making a new app for Windows 10 and are directing all customers to use Amazon.com in the future or to buy an iOS or Android phone..

I wouldn't put a lot of stock in either a speculative article or a random customer service representative determining whether amazon builds a new app. If you want it to appear take the 3 minutes to send amazon feedback to let them know what you want.
Here, I'll even write it for you:

Dear Amazon,

I've been a customer since {insert year that shows up on amazon.com home page when you're signed in}. I'm writing to let you know that as a Windows Phone user I'm extremely disappointed that you recently chose to discontinue support for the platform. Please consider creating a new Windows 10 UWP. This one application can be used on Windows 10 desktop, tablet, and phones and reach hundreds of millions of potential customers. Thanks.

FWIW here's the reply I got back when I wrote Amazon about pulling their app.
It certainly wouldn't hurt if they heard from more people!

Well, I won't hold my breath for them to release a Windows 10 app. Seems like everyone is bailing on Windows.

Me neither. Honestly, the only thing I used that app for was to track my packages and maybe check something in my account once in a while. Cortana can track any package coming into my e-mail such that I don't even need an app.

Still, it's better to have an Amazon app than not. If just for appearances sake.

Critical app from Amazon would be Amazon Now. They were saying it was "coming soon", but with dropping the main app I suspect it will never come. That means I can never use Amazon Now as they insanely insist that to be able to order within a 1 or 2hrs same day (as I can in my area) I can *only* do that on mobile! Which currently means iOS or Android.
