In 8.1 are the following still available:

- Gallery: view the latest pictures shared by Facebook friends without opening the app

- Contacts: view a contacts social updates without opening Facebook or Twitter

- Me Tile: view latest posts and comments made by others without opening apps

You can view Facebook photos in gallery app , you can see status updates in contacts , and me tile is still there to post quick status , check-in but Facebook/twitter notifications will be available in notification centre in windows phone 8.1

So if I click a contact in my address book that's linked with their Facebook it'll still show me recent activity and photos without having to open the fb app?

Yes it will. But if you want to comment/ reply it will open the Facebook app and redirect you automatically to that post.

Nice, thanks. I read a few posts saying it just has a new connect box and doesn't show actual posts so that's good to hear.

For the photo app, does it display friend activity or only your Facebook photos?
