Are there any benefits if I use Hotmail on my Lumia rather than my GMail account?

Is there something else, something that looks better or more functions , etc, etc? ... Cause when I first set up my phone I had gmail put on it but I also own an outlook account so should I switch or is it the same?

I am in the process of closing my gmail account in favor of an outlook.com account. I prefer the interface and syncing is a breeze. I have a Hotmail address as my Microsoft Account and an outlook.com address as an alias.

Mmmm ...
Doesn't really matter.
The e-mail client treats all accounts the same as far as I can tell.
I appreciate the linked inbox feature on the phone, one tap to see all accounts in one place.
Outlook.com can gather all accounts together also.

I have hotmail for my windows phone account and yahoo for my personal account. Linked the mailboxes in the mail section. Both sync well and no problems sending or receiving with either one.

There are a number of very capable GMail apps.
If you don't rely on Gmail for work or anything, I recommend switching to outlook though.

With Gmail you can not search for email(s) on the Gmail servers, only local. You used to be able to by changing some configuration setting(ports, server names) but no longer. If someone knows a way please share.

@palaudawg You're right. Up until recently, we used to be able to search for messages on the Gmail server. Now, from WP, you can only search the current set of messages on your phone. It sucks. That reason alone is enough to want me to start moving all my mail from now on to outlook.com where this is still possible. I assumed it has something to do with Google no longer supporting Exchange active sync, but I don't know for sure. Does anyone have an answer to this question, or if there's any work around?

I accidently discovered how to search for my old messages on the Gmail server. Settings/accounts/google, unselect in "Content to sync" Contacts and Calendar.
After doing this I seem to remember that being a trick I had read in WPCentral forums a year or two ago. I don't use the contacts or calendar with Google so its no big deal to give up in order to gain the ability to search the server.

You guys seem to be ignoring the elephant in the room as to why you should use a Microsoft account on Windows Phone...

That warm synergistic feeling you get deep in your soul knowing you did ;P

Gmail is my "trash" account. I've had it for years. My primary accounts are Outlook and two exchange accounts. The only reason I keep it is because Gmail has some archived items I sometime need to call up.

Ha ha ha... Me too, using gmail for trash!

Gmail will be checked every 15 minutes, so message arrival may not be timely as a msn account (pushed immediately).

Gmail can be set up as "as they arrive" just as Microsoft. I had my Comcast email set up for the 5 days I had my Ativ SE and never did get an email. I had an Outlook alias, and didn't receive one email to either one of the addresses. Never did have an issue with Gmail.

Outlook.com works nicely with windowsphone. Contacts, calendar, tasks and email work great!

Strange, I can search years-old emails in Gmail without having to disable contact and calendar syncing. And no I don't have all email downloaded to my phone, just the past month.

the benefit is that you won't sell your personal informations, and you won't even get paid

Interesting, might have something to do with WP 8.1.
