Are you going to take advantage of the free upgrade?

Yup!

Good thing I created a system image on the first day I got my laptop, will use that and then upgrade after cloning my HDD of course just in case things go pear shaped...

In short the upgrade path will be 32 bit to 32 bit, 64 bit to 64 bit, version to version.

Version to version Yes.
32 bit to 32 bit not always if your cpu is 64bit and supports 64 bit Os you can install the 64 bit version of your current OS version.

It has been this way for windows 7 and greater from the get go.

i am really tempted to try windows 10 preview on my new laptop which is running 8.1. is it worth going for it or wait for the final build?

Only run the TP on a spare machine, especially if like me, you're on the fast ring. There are several bugs, only some of which have workarounds. It is however fun to find the new features and play with them, but sometimes quite frustrating.

The only reason not to upgrade I can see is if you have a device like a printer, where the maker does not support the new OS. I have an HP printer/scanner which is not fully supported under Windows 8, so I upgraded an old XP computer to Windows 7 and that will see out its life on W7.

Everything else will be upgraded; there are just far too many new and useful features, and far too many gains from increased integration of the OSs for it to be rational to stay on 7 or 8.

i have a surface 2 if i need to use a printer so that's no problem. Are the bugs serious issues on TP?

Most of the things work fine on the Windows 10 TP. It is really stable and most of things are compatible with compatibility mode. If you want to try it out and are wary of bugs, then try out the slow builds. Windows 10 TP is the daily driver on my laptop since November and have never really had serious issues.

But what's the catch for those upgrading from pirated Windows? MS recently said non genuine Windows will remain non genuine even after the upgrade. What does this mean? How will the non genuine Windows 10 differ from genuine one? This would need to be all cleared up before upgrading to Windows 10.

I'll take advantage. I'm already running the technical preview and it runs great. I have some major gripes with a number of design decisions but who wouldn't want the latest Windows for free? Even if you don't like it this is the Windows that's going to get the love and attention from here out. Better to have this and adapt than stick to Windows 7 and watch support for it vanish, going through the pains of changing the OS later.

Of course! I have a Sony laptop currently on Windows 7 and the Windows partition of my Mac is on 8.1. Both will be upgraded as soon as possible.

Then next time I visit my (less tech savvy than I, but not completely unsavvy) family I'll upgrade their computers too.
