Band 2 future firmware

Relax Aaron, I'm on your side. :) When I said "I'm seriously puzzled," I wasn't referring to you -- I was AGREEING with you...I was talking about the same post you were complaining about.

As I started reading through this thread, I was wondering the same as David Lohrentz. He may have been rather blunt in his asking, but I think it is very relevant to the discussion and did not see any intention of trolling on his part.

The Band performs very specific tasks and has a small screen to interact with and display information. For those who are disappointed that the Band 2 was announced without Windows 10 IoT, some of us are just curious where that disappointment comes from. What benefits would the wearable gain by being a Windows 10 device? Why is running that OS better/more exciting than a device that runs a dedicated firmware and performs its designed purposes efficiently?

The only reason why it could matter is upgrades. Presumably W10 IoT will be continuously upgraded over the next 5-10 years. The original Band and Band 2 (apparently) run off firmware that Microsoft may or may not upgrade. The last build for the original Band was 10.3.3304.0.09 R. With the Band 2 coming soon, is that it for the original Band?

Just saw the huge growth of the thread. Thanks for all the replys.

To poit and David. Perfectly right question! A brief explanation why at least I care. I am with Microsoft hardware that runs their software a little burned because of the surface RT. Ultimately I chose the RT because of the lack of an active fan and the lack of the possibility to run x86 code (was thinking about security- therefore I am not really convinced by the surface 3 - just for my needs - otherwise great tablet). I went all in for their vision. The device works still perfectly fine... just Win 10 is lacking. Their new all in with UWP apps - I think this platform could start gaining all the apps - and keep them updated. But not on my RT.
So fast forward to my Band 2 question. Ultimately I agree - I couldn't care less what the software is - it runs perfectly I assume. It is fast and light weight. Apps are coming like Fb and starbucks.
So the question is: are those UWP apps - or parts of that? Are they custom written? And in case a Band 3 with Win10 IoT comes - they run Win10 UWP... it is already announced. Will the companies bother to update the old custom written ones? Is the app base ultimately lacking new apps from new companies we can't think of right now? Because UWP is programmed - but no budget for some Band 2 users?
You could say - it doesn't matter - buy a Band 3 when its there. And yes probably that is my solution in the future. If I buy the Band 2.

So that is at least the mind set where I am coming from :)

I don't download a lot of apps on my phone and haven't even looked at third-party apps for my Band, so I wasn't thinking about it from that angle. I see where you were coming from now. Thanks for the response.

my band 1 is pretty beat up and it's the 2nd one within a year or so. I'm not sure Band2 will hold up long enough to worry about next gen software updates... wearable tech doesn't have good durability yet! Too bad the pricing doesn't make it more disposable. Early adopting can suck I guess but someone's gotta do it :D

About wearable tech and durability, my almost ten year old Forerunner 301 would disagree. Built like a tank with battle scars and everything. The battery life isn't what it used to be and I don't use it as much as I used to but it still works.

I was happy with Band 1, but I pre-ordered Band 2 the first afternoon it went up on the MS store. I believe it will hold up a lot better than first version since it has eliminated the battery contacts next to the skin and has a Gorilla Glass screen.

Regarding apps, it really isn't the type of device that you load up with them. Less is more. I'm not sure what I'd want to give up if new ones become available.

That said, MS added biking and golf in the past year. I'd imagine they have more coming.
