Problem is, as FB and Twitter update themselves, People will likely be left in the dust.

What they've done is make it so the FB and Twitter, among other apps can integrate with the phone, a more modular and hopefully better long-term solution in my opinion.

I would guess that Microsoft will extend the Social Extensibility Framework to messaging in an update at some point to allow Skype, Viber, WhatsApp, ChatOn, Kik and Facebook Messenger to plug into the messaging app.
