Camera flashes when flash is switched off

When I take a picture with my Lumia 925 with flash switched off, the LED flash switches on when I press the shutter button half way for focus for a second. Why does it do this? Is there some way to switch it off?

Its the focus assist light feature.. You can switch it off in "photo settings" in your camera app.
