Yes, if you manually adjust the screen brightness to zero you are pretty much looking at a black screen. There was a fun glitch on my Book where if you had the brightness on high when the Book went to sleep sometimes the screen backlight would not turn back on when you woke it up. It never happened unless I set the brightness at 100% while on battery power. The issue does, however, seem to have gone away with today's update.

ETA: If you were talking about the keyboard backlight that can also be turned off very easily using the dedicated function keys
