Cannot Unlock Lumia 1020 - Is Phone "Too New?"

So apparently AT&T are not able to carrier unlock a 1020 phone - both on the website, or by calling support.

I was told that this phone is not permitted to be unlocked at this time .. is that even right that they can do that?

Is there some kind of magic code I need to tell them to allow me to get a carrier unlock - I just need it to use a pre-paid SIM in the UK when I travel there soon - it's not like I want to jump to another carrier.

anyone else run into issues with getting AT&T to unlock an on-contract phone? any suggestions?

Support guy was very nice about it - the system just would not allow him to do it - he suggested I try again in the new year - maybe the embargo is lifted by then ??

I remember when I used to be an AT&T customer that the wait time was at least 90 days. Subsequently they raised that number to 180 days when smartphones became the norm. I do not know what the official policy is these days. Have you tried searching their website? T-Mobile has a document that spells out their unlocking policy in great detail. Best of luck!

Check all the other unlock threads but gist of it is luck and who you can get on the phone.

I got my on-contract 1020 unlocked by contacting ATT, the guy made a request for it and they emailed it to me few days later. It was about 3 months after I got the phone.

AT&T has tightened many bolts, hinges, doors making it very hard for unlockers to enter the arena, end resuly is "Demand > Supply"
To make it simple, prices are going north, and supply is somewhere in the south.

It seems like ATT is trying harder and harder each day to be the most hated carrier on the planet.

Re: Cannot Unlock Phone .. Phone is .."Too New" ?

Just as an update - I got some more clarification on my situation.

I got the phone on the AT&T next program, which essentially removed my ability to unlock the phone.

If I had know that, then I would not have gone with that program.

I am going to pay for the phone outright and get out of the next program, at that point I am able to request an unlock on the phone

so I guess an FYI to anyone else on the ATT next program for a phone - looks like you give up the ability to carrier unlock that phone.

I am sure for most people I'm thinking that's not an issue, but I needed an unlock for when I travel abroad.

It will also be an issue for those who bought the phone used like me... got it much cheaper than market rate but the seller wouldn't unlock though probably because it's such a pain and not just filling a form through their unlock site.
