Can't read SMS

Hello!
My 820 running WP 8.1 denim doesn't read SMS. I have tried several times, with different settings (always, with BT, earphones). Settings seem ok for language. I have Cortana turned off. I have already made 3 soft resets.
Any suggestion?

can the messages be read if cortana is on?

No, unfortunately turning on Cortana didn't fix the problem.
Anyway, thanks for the suggestion.
