theres only two options under backgrounds (light/dark). can you add your own?

As of now you can only choose between light or dark theme.

oh ok my bad i thought i saw people with backgorunds.

You can still get backgrounds with 3rd party applications , but the next update of windows phone 8 , i.e windows phone 8.1 will support backgrounds on start screen.
