Compass calibration

My new 640 is asking me to calibrate the compass by moving the phone in a figure 8 pattern. I've tried this a few times and it hasn't responded at all. This is my first phone with a compass so I'm probably misunderstanding what I should be doing. Can someone explain it to me? I've tried moving the phone while keeping the orientation the same and also rotating the phone as I move it in space.

Thanks - that was enough for me to see that the answer was to move it in the vertical plain. That wasn't at all what I was guessing - figure 8 lying on its side in the air in front of you. Tried it and it worked! This will certainly make walking directions easier.
