Cortana could be US only

I don't think it will just be US. Maybe a few countries, like the US, Canada, UK, and other English speaking countries, but not JUST US. That would be pretty disappointing, considering the US is a market that WP barely sells in.

If this is true it will be very difficult to keep defending WP8 to my friends. Heck, it'd be hard to keep convincing myself that I made the right choice.

Why do you or anyone else have to defend anything? I don't understand the thought process behind it. If I like something I use it. If someone ask me about it I'll tell them. I don't need to convince them to buy it. It's not my job or do I care what they use.

That seems rather insensitive. The market outside US is probably much larger.

Can you imagine the loss and deep depression we all went thru when we found out that the Beatles
were available two years before we even knew who they were ? Mass suicides followed, and lots of acne.

I was teasing him man

So is MS supposed to make it available in every language where they are sold, right from the start?

Again, no, completely wrong. The opposite actually. MS is supposed to make their services available in every country, independent of language. Even if WP only supported speech recognition for U.S. English (which is not true), release it everywhere anyway, because there are millions of people outside U.S. boarders that are fine with U.S. English, and who's pronunciation of the English language is much more similar to someone's from Redmond, than say, someone's from Alabama.

I understand what you're saying but what about regional dialects and accents, two areas that speech recognition has issues with and something that still isn't solved, even with Google Now.

Who cares? Why is that even an issue? My U.S. neighbours have no more of an accent than you do (I assume you are an American). Why should anything relating to language support preclude them from accessing those services?

I don't think it will just be US. Maybe a few countries, like the US, Canada, UK, and other English speaking countries, but not JUST US. That would be pretty disappointing, considering the US is a market that WP barely sells in.

Based on MS' track record, that is exactly what we should expect. I'll say it again... the reasons other countries don't get these services at the same time has nothing ... NOTHING... to do with language support, particularly not speech recognition.

It seems to me that this is a subject that no one in the WPCentral Forums can have any direct effect on, yet it has become quite divisive among us. My suggestion would be to take the complaints to where they can possibly have some effect - to Microsoft.

Can't we all just get along?

Yeah, I know. I ask the impossible........

If this rumor is true, I don't know what to feel

Well, you could feel like you haven't had anything taken away from you, because you haven't. Or you could feel like you're getting royally shafted, and ruin your own day. The choice is up to you.

Can't lie, this thread is funny considering that site runs with rumors whether it is reliable or not. Consider holding off opinion until something solid comes out.

So unlocked international Wp8.1 phones will not get this in 2014? If this rumor is true.(I do not believe this rumor by the way)

Please stop calling this "AI". It is not, and is nowhere even close. Not even in the same galaxy.

There may well be many languages it doesn't get initially released in etc but the rumour as it stands at the moment, I think will turn out to be false. I sure hope so anyway. I'm still not so sure I will be a big user of this voice assistant, as I've never really felt the urge much to talk to my phone. But I'm sure I'll end up using it more and more, especially if it works well. As it appears voice will be a part of many things to come in the future and many people wish to use it right now, I'm all for having it.

I just hope the name Cortana stays and it's not something like Bing Assistance etc. Not that I dislike Bing, I actually use it regularly now, but we all know that 'Cortana' is the clear winner here going forward :)

If 2014 should be WP year, then Cortana needs to be released worldwide. It would be really bad to loose momentum and market sales increase WP is making in last quarters..

But, considering the launch of Xbox One, I wouldn't be surprised if MS screws this up. Release management is something they should look at internally.

For all you that say you don't want to talk to your phone: When I had my Nexus 4 I used that feature A LOT at home. Want to search something, say it, and bang. Was much faster, than writing the search query. Also when I wanted to open a webpage. Or when I wanted to search for the nearest doctor "where is the nearest doctor" and I got the correct results! Another common use case for me "play music from Metallica". I didn't had to open the music player first, could do it from the lock screen.
You will not use it in the train, but for home and in car an assistant like Google Now or Siri is great! So yeah, for me not bringing this feature to WP globally is a no go and could lead to a switch. And now don't come with "Hey, you knew what you got when buying a WP device". Sure i knew! But when I see the other companies bringing cool new features to their devices and the only thing WP can offer are the super camera modules.... You could get crazy... MS is such a big company with HUGE resources but it's like they want to destroy themselves. NOW is the critical point, if you don't get NOW your feet in mobile market you are out FOREVER! Just my 2 cent.
