Cortana crashes when activating voice

I just got a Lumia 950 XL. When I press the microphone button, Cortana crashes. I've tried everything I can think of to get Cortana to work. Since Cortana was broken out of the box and I cant get it to work no matter what region I set my phone to, it makes me think that Cortana must be broken on ALL Windows phones.... But that seems ridiculous to me. Does anyone else have this issue with Cortana on their Windows phone? Is there any suggestions for getting Cortana to work?

Same here, on my 950xl, after updating to .527 a couple days ago. Cortana voice stuff was fine immediately after the update but my phone had other weirdness starting with shutting off during the install. Then it started having problems with calls/texts not being received. Soft resets would fix it for a hour or two but then the problem reoccurred. Anyway, that's why I did a hard reset a few hours ago. Not sure yet if it fixed that problem but now Cortana voice activation doesn't work, she doesn't read texts over Bluetooth, and she crashes when I press the microphone in the app. I just confirmed she works fine on my old Icon which is on 1703 so I'm installing the August update to see what happens.

UPDATE: My Icon was fine after updating to the August update so I used the WDRT to reset my 950XL. It then updated 3 times to get to .527 and Cortana voice activation works again. While it was on the Anniversary update, I tried it and Cortana said the speech pack for the region wasn't installed. I checked and the English US pack was "pending" and the English UK was the default. Not sure why, maybe b/c my phone is an international version and the WDRT set it even though the region was correctly set to US. After the phone finished the .527 update, I checked the speech pack again and the English US status was it needed a restart so I did that and Cortana voice controls worked. I didn't check the speech settings when it wasn't working the first time, yesterday after a hard reset on .527, so I don't know if it that was the cause, but it's worth checking if you're still having a problem.

I recommend you to sign out from the current user account, restart the device and login to the either administrator account or the Microsoft account to check, if that helps.

or

You install any pending updates on the PC to check, if that helps. Updates are additions to software that can help prevent or fix problems, improve how your computer works, or enhance your computing experience.

Cortana is your clever new personal assistant.

Your post doesn't make sense, almost like you didn't read the prior posts, or you're in the wrong thread. To start, we're talking about Cortana on a phone, not a PC. If the OP is still having a problem, then I recommend checking which language pack is being used (Settings > Time & language > Speech) and if it's not the correct one for the region, then get those synced.

The solution in my case was to download the correct speech language within settings / speech.

(This will require a reboot)

In my case in was UK English, then make sure that matches what is in Cortana settings.

After that everything worked great.

I think what is broken is the notification that the correct language is not installed, so you are left to guess what the problem is!!

Hope this helps someone.

Cheers,
