To elaborate, Cortana was Master Chiefs main holographic helper in the Halo video game. MS figured we could all use a digital helper and thus is creating her.

Cortana is an Artificial Intelligence from the Halo universe. AIs were used on large spacecraft to perform advanced data analysis (like is necessary for navigating hyperspace) and help the ship's Captain.

She was created based on the brain of Dr. Halsey, the doctor responsible for the Spartan soldier program that created Halo's main hero: Master Chief John 117.

Cortana is the one of the AI from the Halo franchise.

She reaches rampancy in Halo 4 (which would be bad for our phones), and protects the Master Chief from a massive explosion (which would be pretty cool).

If some how we get cortana on WP and then in the future Microsoft could try to make here a hologram that comes out on the screen of your WP and be 3d just like in the actual game.
