Anyone know if data limits, when trying to download an app, or upload a video, have finally been removed in 8.1?

Its really frustrating when I'm trying to upload a video or full res photo and have to wait for wifi. I am on an unlimited data plan so why CANT I USE IT!!!!

It's doubtful this will be removed. You may be on an unlimited data plan, but I imagine most people are not.

I can understand this. It seems to me though that limiting data usage in this way should not be up to the OS. There must be some other reason.

Yeah. I'd rather it not be removed or at least some pop up saying "the stuff you trying to get is THIS BIG, would you like to continue?" The prompt should only appear if its over a certain amount

The reason is the same as any other design choice that inconveniences the general public: it's to protect ignorant users against themselves. They can lift the limit and even warn people but I'd bet the vast majority of users wouldn't know what a KB, MB, or GB is. So there is no point in warning the user with a message saying "This download is over 100MB, are you sure you want to continue?" if they don't know the significance of what 100MB means in this context.

This data limit stuff seems like more operator controlled than MS controlled. Many users reported few months back that they could get 100MB of mobile data but I can't download more than 20 MB via my phone. So probably the operator chooses what happens to it?

I would honestly be happy if I could just download podcast over cellular that are greater than 25 mb. But, it is about protecting users from themselves.

as an example 2GB would be gone through fairly quick if you were to be able to download 100 MB files over cellular data.
using wifi to do so doesn't effect your cell data. that's why you'd get the nag about the file size.

Yes, but ms has increased cellular download size for apps but not for podcast which is odd. Maybe the 8.1 update will change some of this.

I like the idea but I don't think anybody ever reads popups when installing apps.

Try to download an app which is more than 100+mb , your iPhone does have restrictions and they are still present in iOS 7 (they increased the limit in iOS 7 update last year )

Probably should've give users a setting hidden in the Store, maybe something like "Allows big file size download using data/without wifi"...

Heck, probably the telcos cooperate with the OS creator to impose a limit lol

I do believe the data limit its is more to keep bandwidth open for everyone. People downloading huge files on the cellular network take up resources from those just trying to check email or Facebook. In smaller areas this might not be that much of a concern, but large cities like new York it could cause issues lime when the iPhone first came out

then why can I tether to my laptop and download any file but I can't download a 51meg podcast directly from my phone.

That could be the way things are. It maybe a limit in the phones because everyone has a smart phone now. It could be because you are paying the extra to tether and they know you're a power user. I'm not sure. I was just throwing out some thoughts.

Another example, I can't download a 51meg podcast but I can download 8 10meg songs in succession.
