Data transfer via USB still slow?

Today, I used a WP8.0 device and my regular 8.1 device, and the data speeds for copying files through USB were still painfully slow. My PC's USB is 2.0 (I think), but is very fast with my external hard drive which supports USB 3.0 (Like 30 MB/s).

Why does copying files from hard drive to phone (and vice versa) still take like forever? And it seems impossible to copy files from one phone to another, is that correct?

I am currently coping about 40GB of music and pictures to my 128GB card. it's been about an hour and have about 83% done. But I never remember any move like that be quick, no matter what phone I have.

It goes slighty quicker on a Moto G - but maybe that's "only 12gb" of storage available. I do remember my iPod video went quite fast, but that's a normal hard drive. Do you think it's just that weird faux-SD system the manufacturers choose that makes the transfer so slow?
