On the Nokia Lumia 920, is there a way to touch the phone icon of the main (start) menu and get right to the numeric reypad and not the "HISTORY" of the numbers dialed?

Try installing some third party apps. This feature is not available in in-built phone dialer. You can try Truedialer or Phone Dialer
