I just got my Lumia 520 today, already got Win Phone 8.1 on it. I started browsing the web to see if there is a "jailbreak" or something for it to install "unoffical" XAP files.....(no i'm not going to ask where to get the XAPs, just wondering if its possible yet

You have to be a Developer and you can install your own xaps on your phone using your account.

Developer preview only gives you the updates faster. It isn't a developer unlock. If you want to put your own apps on the device you need to register as a developer, I believe it cost $99 per year

$99 is overkill....$99 a YEAR is ROBBERY!! iOS, Android and Blackberry have ways of installing "third-party" apps or "side-loading" apps......that sucks they haven't done anything like that for Windows Phone 8

I think with the developer unlock you can sideload one app for free. I have successfully sideloaded MS old YouTube app v. 3.1 on my wp8. Haven't tried on wp8.1 but I guess it should work anyway.

Also, a developer account costs 19$ since last summer, not 99$

Check dev.windowsphone.com

I'm a paying developer (even though I don't really develop), and never really considered side loading apps. But I might actually do it just for that youtube app, it was great. Just one question, where'd you get it?

Has anyone tried and/or had any luck with that Chinese unlock app? I haven't gotten it to work at all.....

Nope and dont want to either.
There is a small change that your phone is getting blacklisted if it works.
If you follow that thread on XDA then you probably know that there is no easy way to completely unlock the lumia's right now.

Oh, I didn't know there was that sort of risk involved.....I figured that worst case the next update would block it, similar to iPhone updates.....i'm still pretty new to the Windows Phone.....I had one about 9 months ago and I didn't like it and got this one I have now for dirt cheap and tried 8.1 on it...gotta say 8.1 is pretty awesome and the only thing Windows Phone needs now is bigger app selection :)
