Device encryption

Under Settings > System > Device encryption, there is the ability to encrypt my 'files and folders'.

Has anyone done this?
Does it only encrypt files on my phone, or also on my removable storage?
Does it slow the phones speed on any tasks?
Will it cause any issues when connecting via USB to an unsecure or secure PC?
Is there any sort of negative impact from doing this?

Don't think so. I have it set for mine so nothing is accessed if you phone is lost or stolen.
