Dock Functioning on USB

So I have my nice little HP dock next to my computer monitor powered up, but only want to use it as a charger and in order to transfer things by USB, such as taking pictures off the device or SD card, Or transferring things such as videos onto the SD card

However connecting a USB to the computer from dock doesn't seem to do anything, does not show up in file Explorer and all once it's plugged in to the dock and dock is plugged in to the computer

But when I take device out of the dark and plug-in directly to USB of course it works fine and shows up in Explorer as normal

Am I missing something here?

Not sure about how does the HP dock work but you can't do that on MS Continuum dock without it being powered seperately from it's charger if that helps.

The Desk Dock is not for connecting to a computer, it's intended as an extension to the device. The x3 IS the computer here, it's exactly the same as how you can't connect a computer to another computer through USB. (this is the way USB is designed, it needs a "host" computer and then devices connect to that host computer)

You can plug USB drives and other USB accessories into the dock, much like how you would plug them into a desktop or laptop.

For transferring files between the x3 and another computer, you can use USB drives, transfer over the internet (email, OneDrive), or use the USB-C to USB-A cable (which will configure the x3 as an external drive for connecting to another computer).

Right that's what I thought. I haven't tried it yet but I wonder what happens if you try and plug an external hard drive into the dock.

I assume it'll show up as a additional storage device in file manager on the phone, right?

That is correct, any sort of USB storage will show up in File Explorer. USB flash drives and hard drives work. Generally, if it works on a Windows PC without additional drivers, it should work on the x3.
