I met this issue many times. Once you wake up the machine by whatever opening the cover, clicking the power button, the screen is freeze and nothing you can do. You hvae to reboot the machine by clicking the power button in some seconds to skip this issue, not fix it. Does somebody has some idea about this bug? It always got me mad

It happened to my Surface 2 today. After I rebooted, it was in the process of installing updates. Not sure if that had anything to do with why the lock screen froze. For me, Surface 2 has been a lot more buggy than my original Surface RT. I'm actually on my 2nd Surface 2. The first one I returned because of the crashing, pixelated screen issue mentioned in another thread. And another thing happened to me today. I was charging my Surface 2 and when I tried to turn it on to see if it was fully charged yet, it wouldn't turn on. I tried a few times, but nothing. And it was extremely hot. I unplugged the charger and was able to reboot it, so now it appears to be working again. Never had an issue like this when charging my Surface RT. The charge had reached 100%, so to me it seems that it didn't shut off the charging once it got to 100%. It just kept trying to charge, which would probably explain why the Surface and the charger were so hot. Weird. I've got mixed feelings about Surface 2. The screen is better and it seems a lot zippier than my Surface RT, but it seems less reliable.

Keeps occurring to me after I charge it with the type 2 cover attached. When I unplug it from the charger and un-attach the cover, it freezes on the lock screen with a black screen. Anyone know if this is fixable or a hardware defect with my model?

Yes...as I posted on a thread that the Moderator closed, it's much more than just that...

The Surface 2 is sadly not ready for primetime.

I LOVE so many things about the device (even posting effusively about it here and on CNN) but after living with my 64GB Surface 2 for nearly two weeks, I simply cannot believe the number of black screens, lockups and reboots I am getting. It's a daily occurrence at a minimum.

Yesterday's big update didn't change a thing sadly. I was so hopeful! I also see many screen rotation (make that no rotation) issues and have even had a failure to charge too necessitating a hard reboot. I barely have any apps loaded up so it's not an app causing this I'm certain, especially after reading about the same complaints by others.

Hard to believe there are so many stability issues on such an amazing device but I can say that this will be a machine for a very limited audience unless Microsoft can get its act together very soon. The general public just won't tolerate this, especially considering iPads and Android tablets are very stable, if nothing else.

Seem to be happening to me on my Surface 2 64GB a couple of times a day, haven't detected a pattern, yet at least, happens when charging or not, with old touch cover, with new type cover, without cover, there is no app that I have been able to identify as related.
The manifestation of the problem also varies, sometimes when pressing the power button I get my splashscreen that refuses to slide up while other times all I get is a "lit" blackscreen. Pressing the windows button in the bezel always seems to yield a vibration though.
Have tried a system refresh (the one where you keep your apps), if that does not help I will have to try a full reset.

I've been doing a full shut down at night until they fix the random bugs... doesn't do sleep mode well, esp. with the touch cover from what I've experienced.

Funny, in was looking for a thread like this to see if I'm alone or not. I guess not. I'm also on my second Surface 2 due to the pixelated freezes. I notice this seems to happen more with the type cover attached. I'm trying to use it without the cover to see if it happens at all or with less frequency.

i had the same problem, when i leave the surface for a few hours... i come back and try to use it, the screen blacks out but the tablet is still running

i ended up getting it replaced :)

Locking it before closing it with the keyboard attached seems to help for me. Sucks to have to press the lock button before closing it though.

It happends with me too.
I bought a SP2 32GB last week, and after the first complete (100% 12h) charge, it simply became black. I couldn't unlock (or "unblack") the screen.

What to do now? What do you do when it happends?

Obs.
My son (of course, this child is the best!) turned off, by holding the on/off button, and closing the cover.. After some minutes,., carefully... He tried to turn on, whithout cover swiched: IT RUNS AGAIN...
UHUL...
My first bug fixed.

This happens all the time with my Surface 2. And while it doesn't really hinder me significantly, the frequency with which it occurs is really aggravating. In the 4 months I've owned it, not a single update has fixed this. I also wonder if it has something to do with the covers.

Yes, sadly happened while I was showing off me new surface hahahaha, I wonder what Is the reason for this.
