Does the Windows 10 upgrade only work on W8 machines?

My computer is a 5 year old HP running Win 7 SP1. It was supposedly OK for the upgrade, so I did it. A week later it stopped working. It wouldn't even load the OS. I had to hard close it. (Hold down power button), because it never connected. Couldn't even use the power button to shut down. This is after 10-15 minutes. I was finally able to get 10 off my computer & go back to 7. Works perfectly! No issues with Windows 7. Terrible upgrade, terrible OS.

Sometimes BIOS update are necessary to ensure stability.
