I'm running Win 8.1 on my SP3, and my IT dept has it locked down on Windows updates. I see there was a firmware update on 7.25.15, how do I tell what revision of FW I've got? I looked through the Windows updates, the last were on done on 7.7.15, when my IT guy picked up the tablet.

Currently I've got a problem with the pen, it won't launch OneNote. It pairs without any problems, and I've tried other pens at the MS store, none work, so I'm guessing it's a FW issue. I'd like to find out what version of FW I've got, and what the latest is, so I can get the IT dept to open it up and install the latest.

Failure to start OneNote with top of the pen, isn't a firmware issue. I would recommend first installing the "Surface" app from the store, and then toggle which OneNote you want to start with the pen (either the App, or the Program).

But it just may well be that your IT department has screwed up a group policy setting. So if the Surface app doesn't work, give your IT department a call and have them figure it out, since they are really in charge of your SP3

Thanks Guz. So what's the difference between the OneNote App and the OneNote Program. Do people typically run one over the other?

The 'app' a UWP, app, while the 'program' is a standard win32 program.

Personally I prefer the app, especially as it's been improved since the w8.1 version. I makes no difference to your actual Notes so you can use either.
