Goodbye, Lumia 920: The AT&T Exclusive Superphone Will Probably Flop

that's only in the U.S. You are in Ghana.

Yeah I know, posted it for my US bragging Nokia diehard fanboys. For me I care about non of these because I get international version of smartphones, no damn carrier branding or exclusivity.

I don't buy the argument that "only AT&T wanted the 920." Verizon and T-Mobile are going to sell the 8X, after all. Why wouldn't they sell the 920?

In the feature phone market maybe. But in the smartphone market, it's a different story.
wasn't it the plan? HTC dominates USA and Nokia goes worldwide. And it's pretty oblivious the Worldwide is much more important than just USA. makes sense

I don't believe that either. Why not offer all models if all were offered. Doesn't make sense. Unless AT&T gave something in return that Verizon wasn't willing to give [like they did with the iPhone initially] I can understand that. But to just say "nah, we don't want what many are considering the best WP7 smartphone" is just odd.

Nokia made the same "the US isn't important, we're going for the world market" argument back in 2003 and quit rather than do the hard work of competing in the US marketplace.

As a result, two US-developed ecosystems that won the war in the USA -- Android and iOS -- came out of nowhere to utterly destroy Nokia's once-dominant smartphone empire worldwide.

Just two years ago, Nokia Symbian devices were HALF of all smartphones sold worldwide. Today, Nokia's smartphone marketshare worldwide is negligible, while Samsung, Apple and HTC all dine on fine steak from their iOS and Android sales/profits.

If Nokia thinks that round two will go any better with the same strategy, I'd urge them to reconsider, fast. They need to be competitive and on top of the US marketplace to have any hope of remaining a major global smart device player.

If I was Nokia and was trying to avoid going bankrupt, Id have as may possible carriers as possible carry my phone. No way in **** I'd switch to ATT no matter what phone. Guess HTC getting my money. What will be funny is average person who does not get into tech specs of phone, will see nice red/yellow/blue phone that ATT is advertising and then go to Verizen/Tmobile to get and see the red/yellow/blue htc and think it is the same phone and buy it. And probably never know the difference because they didnt know what the **** it was in the first place..lol

If the 920 doesn't go to Verizon I think Nokia is really missing out on a lot of potential sales. Sure it might sell well on AT&T, but Verizon is a large carrier and they can really push a lot of phones. If the 920 is exclusive it wouldn't surprise me at all for the 8X to outsell it in the US. I know as much as I want one I'm not going to wait for it unless it was a couple of weeks.

The Lumia 920 was supposed to be the savior of Windows Phone. It was going to finally usher Windows Phone into the mainstream. It packs the right goods for the job with forward-thinking features such as wireless charging, NFC, and a gorgeous large screen. But none of that matters now. Like the Lumia 900 before, the Lumia 920 is exclusive to AT&T. And that?s just dumb.

Supposed to be the savior? I thought a week ago people were saying we don't need Nokia?

Being an HTC Arrive user from Sprint, this just further disappoints me. I'm planning to jump ship on November.

Same boat but I'm probably going to the Note2 in November when it comes out. I look at news like this and really don't see a huge, substantial market for WP anymore. It seems like every move MS or the device manufacturers do, they end up shooting themselves in the foot. I've been exclusive to windows since CE 10-15 years ago. I've been with Sprint for about as long. I've always really liked Windows and over the past year, I've really grown to appreciate and like WP7.5 but it looks like I probably won't be back to Windows until probably WP9 or whatever they come out with once it all settles out.

It really bothers and kinda saddens me to see such a good OS be kept in the dark by bad marketing and bad business decisions.

Right, because everyone who said "we don't need Nokia" is the same as people who said "this was supposed to be the savior but isn't."

I'm going to wait and see. HTC's pricing for the 8X is too high out the gate, and I'm hoping they cut it after a couple of weeks. I also am keen to see what new features WP8 has.

I'm certainly not waiting for Nokia to set the market on fire in the USA. It's pretty clear they're content with being a tiny niche player, ala Sanyo, Pantech or Kyocera, in this market.

Brother, don't jump ship. Stay with our beloved HTC and you won't regret. They have stuff in their sleeves for WP. Nokia's future is becoming even clearer now.

Please don't jump ship, you'll even regret more in the droid world. MS will settle out all these issues once WP8 comes out and thus make us all happy. Just wait and see......please don't go, WP needs you.

Not sure I see the issue. Nokia go to one carrier and get loads of promotion, or every carrier, but no promotion.

If people want the device, they can switch, buy unlocked, or wait.

The 8x and Ativ S are still wins for WP8, and great phones.

It's the same situation in the uk, and I'll be buying when I can afford to buy unlocked. That said still not 100% sure which phone to buy.

T-Mobile and AT&T use different bands for 3G. So UK phones will work on AT&T for 2G and 3G (plus HSDPA) but only 2G for T-Mobile. As for Verizon and Sprint, well, our phones will just not work on those carriers period. Buying unlocked in the US means you paid full price for a device that you still potentially can't use on your carrier.

I do prefer the UK system. "Oh Three aren't offering the HTC TITAN?" *goes to Carphone Warehouse* "One HTC TITAN off-contract please" *pops Three SIM in the phone* - Profit!
